Lamar Hosts Access Transition Fair

RISE Center had the pleasure of participating in yet another annual Access Transition Fair at Lamar University on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. Lamar University Disability Resource Center tries every year to make sure that there are plenty of resources and information available to transitioning area high school students so that they are prepared for whatever next steps their futures hold.

Check out some of the great things we captured!

Texas AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Gearing up for Health Careers Summer Camp 2017

Texas AHEC (Area Health Education Center) is gearing up for another fun-filled educational Summer camp experience for those students  who have demonstrated an interest in health professions, as well as a commitment to completing their education.  In conjunction with community partners like Lamar University, Chambers Health, Beaumont Baptist Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, and St. Luke’s Heart Hospital, the camp provides job shadowing opportunities, hospital and university tours, and hands-on activities that provide hours of enrichment and learning. For more information on this camp, you can contact the Coastal Texas AHEC at the link provided. The site is under construction, but the contact information is correct:

Financial Aid for Students with Disabilities

In 2011, 11% of all students enrolled in higher education reported having a disability, and this growing number indicates that more students with disabilities are enrolling than ever before.  While this is cause for celebration, these students face additional financial challenges in achieving their educational goals. To address these needs, have created a guide to financial aid for students with disabilities.

Their guide includes valuable resources for students with disabilities, such as:

  • A curated list of more than 85 disability-specific scholarships
  • Strategies for utilizing state and local financial aid resources
  • An overview of loan forgiveness and reduction options

We think their guide is a great resource for students transitioning from high school to post-secondary education. There is a link provided above where you can access the site, or you can find the site under our Youth Transition Services tab – as well as a great deal more valuable information for students that are in the transitioning stage of life.

RISE is Sponsoring a Student for Summer Camp!

Each year Texas AHEC East – Northeast Region hosts a week long summer camp specifically for high school students. During the camp, attendees experience as many different health careers as possible through tours, shadowing, panel discussions, and medical procedures.

This year, RISE Center, is sponsoring a student from a local High School to participate in the camp!
